Southend United take on beleaguered south west outfit Plymouth Argyle on Saturday afternoon at Roots Hall as the Shrimpers look to secure back-to-back victories on home turf.

Southend saw off promotion candidates Gillingham 1-0 midweek thanks to defender Mark Phillips’ 87th minute strike. That win propelled Southend into 9th spot and will be looking to climb the ladder further with the visit of a Plymouth side who have yet to win in League Two this season.
Southend have a home record of 2-1-1 4/3, with wins over Hereford and Gillingham, a draw against Northampton Town 2-2 and the loss was to Burton Albion 0-1. In attack they have some useful players in strikers Blair Sturrock, Anthony Grant, Kade Ferdinand and Ryan Hall.
Plymouth Argyle
On the flip side, things go from bad to worse for early relegation candidates Plymouth Argyle; they have not won a match so far, and their away record stands at 0-1-3 2/8 and I’ve not had a bad feeling about a side so early on in a league campaign as I do with Plymouth.
Manager Peter Reid is already facing a massive uphill task in just saving Plymouth’s football league status amidst financial turmoil and key players leaving ie Bradley Wright-Phillips.
The Pilgrims have now lost seven matches on the trot conceding 16 goals in the process and the warning signs are there for all to see unfortunately.

In summary, Southend at home should be too strong for woeful Plymouth at Roots Hall and it seems to be a question of by how many rather than if at all.
I’m therefore backing them to secure victory by more than one goal and taking them on the handicap. Southend to win 2-0.
