PREVIEW
Newcastle are still undefeated and come to Birmingham lying 4th. Last weeks draw at QPR was unimpressive, but along with the win over Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup, they are on a tidy little run, albeit laboured.
Aston Villa sit with just 1 win in their 4 matches, but they are also still undefeated and are favoured here as the home team. Villa have won all 4 of their last meetings with Newcastle at Villa Park, and in 3 of those matches did so without conceding.
Newcastle have scored just 4 goals in their last 7 away games. The way they struggled at Scunthorpe, and at QPR, mean Aston Villa should be able to keep this team quiet, especially since they have not replaced the quality they have allowed to leave in Andy Carroll, Joey Barton and Jose Enrique.
Villa have not been beaten in any of their last 6 home games. They come in here on good defensive form, with keeper Shay Given and the defence keeping 2 clean sheets so far, conceding just 3 goals in 4 games. Fabian Delph will play alongside Stylian Petrov in midfield as Jenas and Heskey are ruled out through injury. Up front, Villa have Agbonlahor, who helped his team to a vital point against Everton, while Darren Bent is now surely due a goal. Charles N'Zogbia should be able to trouble the Newcastle defence too, as Ryan Taylor looked a bit out of his depth last week against Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Most worrying of all, is Newcastles offence. They just do not create enough chances and their results so far as very much the result of the way their defence has played so far. Villa are good for goals at home and I can see them scoring here, quite easily more than once. Newcastle will do well to net just once the way they are going.
BETTING VERDICT
Aston Villa are the pick for me at evens. I'll recommend a cheeky side bet on Darren Bent to open the scoring too, priced at 5.00.
If you are greedy, take Aston Villa -1AH as that pays 2.70 with the 1 goal win returning your money safe and sound.
