English League One
2011-09-10 - Scunthorpe United vs Sheffield United
A Sports Betting Pick by ArmchairPunter
Football – England – League One
Saturday 10th September 2011 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
Scnthorpe United take on a rampant Sheffield United at Glanford Park on Saturday afternoon with the visitors looking for a swift return to Championship football and currently sitting joint top of the table.
Scunthorpe United
The hosts are still without a win so far in League One, having drawn four and lost two. Their home record stands at 0-2-1 3/4 and perhaps not as easy a start as they might first have thought. Two 1-1 draws against Preston and Colchester United respectively and a 1-2 loss against Oldham Athletic have left Iron in the lower half of the table.
Midfielder Robert Grant (4 goals) leads Scunthorpe's scoring charts and they also have Chris Dagnall (1 goal, 2 assists) who scored 20 goals season before last for Rochdale in League Two. However, do they have the depth and quality to really hurt the Blades? Time will tell I guess but perhaps look a little light in midfield and attacking areas and also the creativity department.
An important point to consider also is that the first choice Scunthorpe keeper Josh Lillis is out for three months with damaged knee ligaments, so manager Alan Knill only has reserve Sam Slocombe available who has never started a league game in his career.
Sheffield United
Their opponents this afternoon, Sheffield United, have come out of the traps quickly and with purpose; five straight wins and one draw means the Blades have earned 16 points out of the first 18 available, scoring 13 goals in the process.
Sheffield United will be looking to strikers Richard Cresswell (3 goals, 2 assists) and former Derby County forward Chris Porter (2 goals, 1 assist) to make significant contributions at this level, and they could form a pretty formidable strike partnership for the South Yorkshire outfit this term.
It’s in midfield though that I fancy Sheffield United over the hosts with Michael Doyle and Stephen Quinn (4 assists) and I think they have the edge in terms of creativity.
The Betting Verdict :
Interestingly, Scunthorpe hold a very definite advantage over Sheffield United in previous meetings with Iron winning five of the last six encounters, but I see that trend changing in this fixture.
Sheffield to win 1-0, but will cover it due to the past history.
The Pick :
Scunthorpe 0-1 Sheffield Utd
