2011-09-10 - Charlton Athletic vs Exeter City
A Sports Betting Pick by ArmchairPunter
Football – England – League One
Saturday 10th September 2011 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
Unbeaten third placed Charlton Athletic take on lowly Exeter City at The Valley on Saturday and will be looking to further extend their run with the visit of the West country club and their slow start to this new campaign.
Charlton Athletic
The Addicks have once again shown early promising form but this time around will be wary of slipping up as they did last season as their campaign fizzled out to a very disappointing finish. Manager Chris Powell will certainly do his best to ensure matches like these are converted into taking all three points.
Charlton have also not been shy in front of goal either with forward Bradley Wright-Phillips (4 goals, 3 assists) leading the way and looks set to achieve another double-figure goal tally as per last season (21 goals in 40 starts). Ex-Spurs midfielder Johnnie Jackson (3 goals, 1 assist) is also a key figure in the middle of the park, as is former Oldham midfielder Dale Stephens (2 goals, 1 assist).
Up front, they also have secured the services of former Scnthorpe hit-man Paul Hayes who bagged 18 goals for The Iron a couple of seasons ago whilst in League One, and his addition must surely give Charlton that impetus that they lacked last season. Throw in midfielder Scott Wagstaff into the mix too and you have a fairly potent attacking force.
Charlton’s home form so far reads 3-0 win over Bournemouth, then draws against Scunthorpe United 2-2 and Sheffield Wednesday 1-1.
Exeter City
Exeter City will probably not be looking forward to their trip to South East London with any sort of relish given their one success this season was at home against Chesterfield, the Grecians winning 2-1.
However, it’s Exeter's away form that is cause for immediate concern as they’ve failed to score and picked up just one point out of the nine on offer – a 0-0 draw at Stevenage, which was followed by 0-1 at Preston and 0-2 at Hartlepool United.
They therefore sit in 20th spot just above the early relegation places, and although there’s no cause for alarm just yet, only one other team has failed to score on the road asides them, Leyton Orient.
Exeter do have some players that Charlton will need to keep an eye on though; strikers Daniel Nardiello and Rowan Vine can always cause problems, along with midfielders Liam Sercombe and Guilleme Bauza.
The Betting Verdict
Charlton will be looking to avenge a 1-3 defeat at the hands of Exeter City back in February this year.
I’m sincerely hoping it’s a different Charlton this season as they too often flattered to deceive last term, plus if they have serious promotion ambitions they should be winning these types of fixtures.
