PREVIEW
The FIU Golden Panthers and the Louisville Cardinals meet in non-conference action, both looking for a 2nd straight win to start the season perfectly. These two teams have never faced each other before.
Florida International came flying out of the traps last week against Sun Belt rivals North Texas. The Panthers scored 28 points in the first quarter (a school record) and the mauling ended 41-16. They were a lot Meaner than North Texas, I can tell you that!
FIU won it's first ever bowl game at the end of last season, and they have picked up right where they left off here. It helps when you've got the stars from the previous season playing again!
Sun Belt Player of the Year TY Hilton set up the opening touchdown by returning the opening kickoff for over 60 yards. He also caught a 60 yard pass for a touchdown and ended the game with over 283 yards! QB Wesley Carroll also had RB Darriet Perry to hand the ball to, as he rushed for 2 touchdowns over 95 yards. Kedrick Rhodes added almost 80 yards to the FIU rush offence and I think this looks a very balanced attack that could seriously trouble Louisville.
Louisville faced Murray State in their opener and did not look convincing at all. The team has 17 freshmen making their debut while a further 7 players also played their first proper game. The result? A 21-9 win where Louisville failed to score in the 2nd half!!
That kind of performance will not help against an FIU defence that is rated as one of the best in the Sun Belt. Last week against North Texas, they did not allow a single touchdown, with the points coming on errors (fumbles and a safety)
Will Stein, the Louisville QB was intercepted last week and the offence fumbled the ball 3 times against Murray State. But that is what you can expect when you field an offence with not a single returning player!!
BETTING VERDICT
The spread is set at 3.5 and that is enough for me to pull the trigger on FIU. They have a great shot at winning outright so why not take the points!
The Pick :
Florida International to keep it within 4
