Liverpool v Bolton
Football : English Premier League

This game is live on TV

Liverpool

Kenny Dalglish surprised many by deciding to play a very strong team in the Carling Cup against Exeter during the week and it is clear he wants to bring silverware to club after spending a lot of money in the last 2 transfer windows.

It has been a positive start to the season for the Reds as they look to regain their place in the Champions League. They have picked up 4 points in their opening 2 games and sit in 5th place in the Premier League. The only surprise about their points total may be the fact that they drew with Sunderland at Anfield, but won at the Emirates against Arsenal.

Liverpool are still unbeaten in their first 3 games of the season and have a chance to get to 7 points with a win here, a tally that took them 9 games to reach last season. They have lost just 1 of their last 13 games at Anfield, 12 of those coming since Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson. Goals had not been much of a problem in their home games at the back end of last season, and they did score 14 goals in their final 5 Premier League games at home.

Raul Meireles is going to be missing the next few weeks with an injury suffered at Exeter during the week. Luis Suarez should start after being on the bench at Arsenal, but Glen Johnson needs a late fitness test before the game.

Bolton

Bolton had to reject a ridiculous offer from Arsenal for their powerful centre half Gary Cahill today as they prepare for a daunting trip to Anfield. They were being touted as a potential dark horse to being dragged into a relegation scrap this season, but if they play as they have in their opening 2 games of the League season, I think they will be fine.

The team opened with a big win at Premier League newcomers QPR away from home and then were involved in an entertaining 2-3 home loss to Manchester City, although they may be disappointed with the number of chances they allowed their visitors to create. Bolton sit in 8th place in the early formation of the League.

The concern for Bolton's future as a Premier League team came from the fact they lost 7 of their last 9 League games, including 5 in a row to end the season. That does mean they have lost 6 of their last 7 League games going back to last season. Bolton had lost 5 Premier League away games in a row before beating QPR to open this season.

Marcos Alonso was injured during the Carling Cup win over Macclesfield and will miss the next 6-8 weeks. Gretar Steinsson, Sam Ricketts and Tyrone Mears are also missing for Owen Coyle.

Head to Head

Liverpool must clearly enjoy playing Bolton as they have now won their last 9 Premier League games at home and away against them.

The Reds have also won the last 9 Premier League games between the teams at Anfield. Bolton scored their first goal at this ground in 6 games last season in a 2-1 defeat.

That defeat last season was as close as Bolton have come in recent games to earning a result at Anfield; they had been outscored 12-0 in their previous 4 visits.

Prediction

Liverpool would have been happy picking up 4 points from their opening 2 games of the season, but the fans will expect another 3 points when they entertain Bolton after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Sunderland on the opening day.

The team actually played very well in that game but could not put Sunderland away when they had their chances to in the first half and were then punished in the 2nd half.

I feel that may be less of a problem against a Bolton side that looked a little vulnerable against Manchester City last week. Luis Suarez has began the season in fantastic form and he looks a real danger to get on the scoresheet for his 4th consecutive game in a row.

Bolton will also have to overcome a psychological hurdle after their recent results against Liverpool, both overall and when they visit Anfield.

Overall it looks like Liverpool will be too strong and I will take them to cover the handicap.
