The New York Yankees will look to continue their recent success when they host Kansas City on Wednesday night in the Bronx. The Yankees won 3-1 on Tuesday night in the first meeting of these teams in 2011.
The Yankees are now 20-13 on the season and have a 1 game lead on the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. New York has been especially good at home with a 13-6 record.
It will be AJ Burnett on the mound for the Yankees tonight. The right-hander has regained decent form after a mediocre 2010 season. Burnett is 4-2 for the season with a 3.71 ERA. He is 4-1 at home as he has generally had great run support from the Yankee offense.
Burnett has a career record of 3-3 against the Royals, but has a good ERA of 2.68. Despite poor overall numbers last year, Burnett was excellent against the Royals. In two starts he only 1 run in 13 innings, yet was only 1-1 as New York failed to score in one of his starts.
Scoring should not be a problem for the Yankees tonight as they face Vin Mazzaro, who was just called up to the major leagues by the Royals.
Mazzaro is 10-17 with a 4.72 ERA in his major league career that started in 2009. Opponents have hit .290 against him so he could be in trouble tonight.
The right-hander has allowed 14 earned runs (17 total runs) in 13 career innings against New York.
Overall the Royals are 18-17 which is much better than expected this year, but they are relying on good results at home (15-8) as they are only 3-9 away from home. The Royals are currently second in the AL Central.
The Royals lost 3 of 4 games in New York last season and were outscored 33-18.
Obviously the Yankees are huge favorites in this game and I would expect them to clear the -1.5 handicap tonight.
The Pick :
New York 8, Kansas City 4
