Football : England : Premier League
Monday 9th May 2011 – Kickoff 8pm
Two in-form teams meet at Craven Cottage on Monday night when Mark Hughes's Fulham take on Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool with the latter chasing a Europa league place under Tottenham’s noses.
Fulham
Fulham are one of the in-form teams in the Premiership at the moment, stringing together a seven match unbeaten run at the Cottage with solid victories over West Brom, Stoke City, Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Bolton Wanderers while holding Chelsea to a 0-0 stalemate.
The Cottagers home record stands at a solid 8-6-3 26/16, and only six other clubs possess a better defensive home record. It's no surprise then that they've conceded only 2 goals in their last seven home matches as their recent success has been built on a strong defence.
Winger Damien Duff has been ruled out for the remainder of the season following his Achilles tendon surgery, but leading scorer Clint Dempsey (12 goals, 3 assists) and defender Brede Hangeland (4 goals, 1 assist) are in line for recalls following injuries.
Midfielder Danny Murphy is set to face his former club when Liverpool visit.
Liverpool
There's no doubt that Kenny Dalglish has brought about something of a revival at Anfield since taking over the reigns of former manager Roy Hodgson, but their away form still remains too inconsistent for his liking.
They’ve recorded three wins; at Wolves, Chelsea and Sunderland, a draw at Arsenal and two losses at West Ham and West Brom in their last six away which has slowed down their progress up the league. Their away record of 4-3-10 17/27 is unacceptable for most fans, but are now probably looking forward to next season with renewed hope after a dreadful start to this campaign.
What is encouraging for Liverpool though is that they still function without influential leader Steven Gerrard and with the strike partnership of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll showing promising signs, the Reds have scored in each of their last ten away matches.
With other attacking options such as Dirk Kuyt, Raul Meireles and a certain Joe Cole who must be champing at the bit to get more game-time, Liverpool will always pose serious threats going forward.
The Betting Verdict :
Mark Hughes is challenging his players to beat previous seasons Premier League points hauls while Dalglish's men are hunting down a previously unlikely European place – I’m backing both teams to score in this one in a possible 1-1 draw.
