A Sports Betting Pick by ArmchairPunter

PETERBOROUGH UNITED v SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY
Football : England : nPower League One
Tuesday 1st February 2011 – Kickoff 7.45pm

When I first looked at the odds for this match I thought one of two things; either the bookies have some inside information, or they're still clinging on grimly to the hope that Sheffield Wednesday will awake from their slumber and become a Premiership team once again.

They might, but not anytime soon I fancy.

Peterborough United

Seventh placed Peterborough United entertain Wednesday this time at their London Road ground which has seen more than it's fair share of goals – 61 to be precise, and with Peterborough United scoring the most home goals in the division too (36 goals).

The Posh's home record stands at a healthy 9-1-3 36/25, and whilst they’ve also conceded the most number of home goals as well (along with Walsall – both on 25), you get the feeling that Peterborough have just one more goal in their tank to get across the line.

Peterborough are unbeaten at home in five matches now which has included four victories; 2-1 over Rochdale, 4-1 over Walsall, 2-1 over Brentford and beat Hartlepool United 4-0. So those four wins have yielded 12 goals for and only 3 goals against as Peterborough bid to secure a fifth successive home win against travelling Wednesday.

Strikers Craig Mackail-Smith (12 goals, 5 assists) and Lee Tomlin (4 goals, 1 assist) are ably backed up by Grant McCann (5 goals, 10 assists), along with Tommy Rowe and Adam Clayton (3 assists each).

Sheffield Wednesday

Tonight’s visitors, Sheffield Wednesday, will be hoping to end a four match losing streak when they travel to London Road. The Owls have lost their last four on the road to Swindon Town 1-2 and Huddersfield Town 0-1, while receiving thumpings at Exeter City 1-5 and Leyton Orient 0-4.

Needless to say the Sheffield Wednesday away form has been the reason that they have slumped to a mid-table position after a promising start to the season. Their away record reads 4-1-7 18/19, and they will be painfully aware that this is just not good enough for a team tipped for promotion before the season started.

Strikers Clinton Morrison (5 goals, 2 assists) and Neil Mellor (6 goals, 2 assists) have both played at a higher level and should both be in double figures by now. Ex-Ipswich Town midfielder Tommy Miller (4 goals, 3 assists) has been pulling the strings as have Gary Teale (6 assists), along with Chris Sedgewick and Giles Coke (3 assists each).

Head-to-head :

Despite Sheffield Wednesday having the upper hand in their previous six encounters with 4 wins and 2 draws, I feel that this run could well be halted at London Road Tuesday night.

The Betting Verdict :

Peterborough United have the momentum at home, and with The Owls poor away record, I sense a bit of unexpected value to be had here.
Peterborough United to win 2-1.
