Werder Bremen were humiliated again last weekend when they lost 3-0 against the relegation candidates FC Koln, so now they face a very difficult situation to save themselves from dropping out, which was something unthinkable for this once mighty German team.
Not only the injury problems with so many players, but also this team became a team of veterans and not many adequate replacements and signings were brought in so that is another reason for their struggle this season. The team captain Mark van Bommel had left the club this week and made a transfer to AC Milan, so Phillip Lahm is the new team leader together with Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Finally Luiz Gustavo will get his chance in the starting eleven since the arrival in the club and he will play alongside Anatoliy Tymoshchuk in the defensive midfield.
Robben and Muller will play at the flanks, and Franck Ribery will have to sit out this week again and he might be back in the squad for the next Bundesliga round. The Belgian central defender Daniel van Buyten was struggling with a cold during the week and he will be placed at the bench. Holger Badstuber is his replacement in the defensive line up.
Mario Gomez has been in superb form having scored 23 goals in 26 matches for Bayern this season and once again he will be the only striker in the formation.
