NEW YORK JETS (9-4)
The New York Jets were an excellent team until recently but as things stand are they even a playoff team? Having been exposed badly these past 2 weeks, I worry about their offensive ability when going up against a defence that is brutal and suffocating.
Two weeks ago, the Jets travelled to New England to take on the Patriots and got humiliated and then some, losing 45-3. It was more than revenge for the Patriots, who had lost their earlier encounter towards the start of the season. While New England get stronger, their divisional rivals continue to slump. Last week, the Jets faced another divisional rival, Miami, and got beaten 10-6 with the offence once again particularly inept.
The team have issues. Their old mojo is gone, and the QB Sanchez has no confidence. Actually, the whole team is lacking belief, if you go by the kind of dropped passes we've been seeing from the receiving corps, and then there is the defence that has suddenly turned into a college lineup. Not good. When you look at the games closely, you'll find the Jets have not scored an offensive touchdown since Thanksgiving Day! God help them down in Pittsburgh.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS (10-3)
The Steelers are on the verge of an AFC North title. Last week, they beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23-7, with all their touchdowns coming via the defence! Big Ben is playing with a broken nose, which he busted during the win over Baltimore. Last week he linked up excellently with Hines Ward, hitting him 8 times for 115 yards.
Polamalu is in particularly good form, with 4 interceptions in his last 4 games. Woodley will be the other Steeler giving Sanchez a hard time, as he too had an interception against the Bengals which he returned for a pick six.
Pittsburgh will have a simple game-plan against the self-doubting Jets. They will stop their rushing attack and make QB Sanchez try and beat them through the air. That is just never going to happen. There are already problems recently with Sanchez turning the ball over these last few weeks. Cornering him into winning it on his own is just going to lead to more mistakes and more turnovers.
BETTING VERDICT
Pittsburgh will bully and frustrate the Jets all game, and when they finally do get desperate and start going for big plays, they will get punished, leading to a Pittsburgh win that will comfortably cover the decreasing spread.
