English League Two
2010-12-11 - Chesterfield vs Torquay United
A Sports Betting Pick by ArmchairPunter
Football : England : nPower League Two
Saturday 11th December 2010 – Kickoff 3pm
Chesterfield (2nd)
Chesterfield could go top of the league if Port Vale slip up at Morecambe on Saturday – that's if they beat sixth-placed Torquay United at their B2net Stadium.
But their first opponent appears to be the heavy fall of snow that is currently covering the pitch – the match referee has declared the pitch fit to play, and Chesterfield are appealing to fans to help clear the snow off the ground.
The Spireites started this season very well, and appeared to be racing to automatic promotion having been unbeaten in their first eight home matches (seven of which were straight wins), but have stuttered slightly in their last two, losing 1-2 to both Burton Albion and Oxford United. Despite this though, they are still well placed to gain promotion this time around.
Chesterfield's home form still remains strong with a 7-1-2 29/17 record, and are the league’s highest goalscorers overall with 38 goals (29 of which have been scored at home), but their defence has shipped 17 goals, with only Stockport County (21 goals) conceding more on home soil. So, with 46 goals in total, the B2net Stadium is certainly the venue to go if you’re expecting goals!
Spireites strikers Craig Davies (12 goals, 1 assist) & Danny Whitaker (9 goals, 1 assist) have been in red-hot form and have been instrumental in helping Chesterfield to their current league position. Such is their firepower, that fellow forwards Drew Talbot (2 goals, 5 assists) and Jack Lester (5 goals, 6 assists) have not only chipped in with their expected goals, but have also turned providers.
The Chesterfield squad are reminiscent of last season's Norwich City squad that attained Championship status on the back of a goal-heavy League One campaign.
Torquay United (6th)
Torquay United are also no slouches in front of goal on the road with The Gulls failing to score just once in their ten away matches so far, which was a 0-0 draw at Stevenage Borough.
Torquay are also going into this match on the back of a seven game unbeaten run which has included away wins at Lincoln City 2-0, Port Vale 2-1, Oxford United 2-0 and Wycombe Wanderers 3-1. Their away record reads 4-5-1 16/10, and only Bury (24 goals) and Crewe Alexandra (18 goals) have scored more away goals so far.
The Gulls leading striker Elliott Benyon (9 goals) heads their scoring charts, along with fellow forward Chris Zebroski (6 goals, 2 assists).
Eight other players have also scored. Kevin Nicholson has returned 4 assists so far, along with eight different players also contributing.
The Betting Verdict :
Chesterfield are usually my go-to team for a value win, but having experienced a couple of recent hiccups along with Torquay United's run of good form, I'm instead backing there being goals in this fixture.
