DENVER BRONCOS (3-6)
Denver come into this looking to avoid the late season collapse that saw their last campaign fall apart. With the team opening the season 6-0, they then lost 8 of the next 10 and that was all she wrote for 2009/10. Now, they are 3-6, but still quite susceptible to a hammering from San Diego, who are capable of putting a thumping on the best of team, thanks to an offence that is top in yards gained.
Denver actually had 4 straight losses prior to their bye week, but came back to win big, 49-29 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kyle Orton, the ex Bears QB, threw a career high 4 touchdown passes, racking up just under 300 yards passing. That takes him to a total of over 2800 yards for the season. Only one QB has done better so far...the guy playing for the other side!
All that passing offence is great. But it's a problem when thats the only game plan a team has got. The running game is non-existent, which means defences aren't exactly left guessing what the Broncos are going to try and do. The Chargers bring the 3rd best pass defence, having allowed just 8 throws to the end zone. Orton is in for a true test tonight.
SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (4-5)
Having lost 5 of their opening 7 games, the Chargers look set to do what they normally do towards the end of the regular season, go on a tear. San Diego beat Tennessee 33-25 before scoring 15 point to beat the Houston Texans 29-23 in what was a fantastic comeback. As always, the man leading the charge was MVP candidate Phillip Rivers.
QB Rivers has now accumulated almost 2950 yards for the season, and threw 4 more touchdown passes in that last game against Houston. The Bolts are actually playing without a full strength receiving corps, but you wouldn't know it with the way Rivers hits his men when he gets into his rhythm.
Denver have recorded only 5 interceptions this year, and are pretty dire defending the pass. They allowed Matt Cassell to throw for 470 yards including 4 into the endzone. The secondary, which is ageing will have trouble containing Rivers, who is nailed on to have a huge game here. The San Diego will be the difference here, as I feel they will be able to keep Orton quiet.
BETTING VERDICT
Take San Diego to win and cover the 9 points spread. I see them winning this one by double digits.
