TENNESSEE
Tennessee don't really have a direction right now. They've changed coach 3 times in the last 3 years and that can't be good for anyone on the team to settle into a pattern. They've been losing games, and are banged up. Now they have to go to South Carolina. Poor Vols!
Tennessees offence isn't going to manage. They aren't great running the football and haven't managed to rack up 100 yards on the ground more than once this season. That leaves the pass as the only means of attack, which means QB Matt Simms and QB Tyler Bray are going to be pass rushed hard and often. The team have not proven themselves to be any good at protecting their QBs either, ranking 113th in allowing sacks. In the 2nd half of the last 4 games, Tennessee has managed just 7 points!!
As you might guess, the Vols defence sees a lot of playing time, thanks to the offence coming on and going straight back off again. That leads to fatigue and it has shown. Looking at stats we see that as the game goes on, the Vols start giving up more and more points. South Carolina will terrorise them and be in a position to really turn the screw late on. Only question is, are they motivated to do that?
SOUTH CAROLINA
South Carolina has been excellent in their play, and the defence is really capable of shutting down the limited Vols offence. Why? Because South Carolina has the best pass rush in the SEC. They are also the 5th best in the country at getting to and sacking QBs. Now go back up and read about the Vols offence again. I'll wait... Bit of a mismatch, isn't it?
On offence, South Carolina have Stephen Garcia as their QB, and he is ranked 5th in the country in passing efficiency. The team is loaded with talent in the key positions of RB and WR and they now have RB Marcus Lattimore fit and playing in this one.
I'm missing something....ah yes, motivation! Why would South Carolina want to batter Tennessee when they get no extra points for it? Revenge. Last year, in Knoxville, Tennessee destroyed South Carolina 31-13, which was their worst loss of the season. Most of the Tennessee players weren't in that game, but most of South Carolinas team was. They will have been waiting for this one, and now it's time to kick some serious ass.
