Time for a "live dog", as they say Stateside...
BALTIMORE ORIOLES
The Orioles have been eliminated from the post season for a while now, but boy are they enjoying their baseball! I've backed them a few times now always at a great price, and had good results, so with a massive underdog price, in a game they are capable of winning, especially considering the difference in frames of mind...I'm in.
Kevin Millwood will pitch for the Orioles, and although he has a 3-15 record with a 5.14ERA for the season, he is clearly working hard. Why? Because he wants to end well, like his team is doing, and is grafting to improve things. The proof is there when you look at his ERA over the last 8 games. It's 3.02.
In his last match, he faced the Yankees, who are the highest run scorers in the MLB. He held them to just 1 run and 5 hits in 7 innings of work. This guy is in good form, and is very very motivated.
BOSTON RED SOX
The Boston Red Sox have lost the first two games of this series, which means they are now out of the postseason. What do you think that will do to team morale?
John Lackey has to come out and pitch for the Red Sox, and his record reads 12-11 with a 4.63ERA. Those aren't exactly awesome numbers, and I'll bet he won't be feeling that perky either. Players will definitely be distracted, and he is no exception. Indeed, it's not like he's on form anyway. He is giving up more hits per 9 innings, and issuing more walks per 9 innings than he ever has. He's also striking out fewer batter per 9 innings than he has since he started playing.
BETTING VERDICT
Two pitchers in completely different states of mind. I'm going with Baltimore.
