A Sports Betting Pick by Stephen
Football: League Of Ireland Premier Division
Sunday 11th July Kick Off 4pm
Shamrock Rovers 2nd ( Home Record W4 D4 L2 )
Dundalk 5th ( Away Record W3 D1 L4 )
Shamrock Rovers have the opportunity to go back to the top of the table with a win over fifth place Dundalk on Sunday afternoon. Rovers produced their best performance of the season on Monday night with a 2-1 win over league leaders St Patricks Athletic in one of the matches of the season so far. That win came 3 days after a fine 2-1 win away at Sligo Rovers. Sligo is a tough place to go to get a win and Rovers now look like a side finally getting into their top form.
Rovers early season form had been inconsistent but they have 7 points from a possible 9 since the break and are unbeaten in 8 league games since they last played Dundalk in a 2-1 defeat. Rovers are favourtites alongside their arch rivals and league champions Bohemians to lift the title. Many of their players are hitting form at the right time such as young star Paddy Kavanagh who had been affected by injuries but was man of the match on Monday night, Tom Stewart signed from Derry had not been producing the goods but got two goals on Monday and put in a superb all round performance and with striker Gary Twigg back to full fitness and scoring important goals again Rovers are definitely serious title contenders.
Dundalk have had a fine season and not many expected them to be so close to the leaders. They are only 4 points behind Rovers with a game in hand and 6 behind leaders St Patricks Athletic. But the signs have been there in recent weeks that they are beginning to slide a bit. They did win 2-1 in their derby against Drogheda last Monday but they have also lost their last 3 away games. However they have beaten Rovers twice already this season.
Dundalk's record against Dublin sides is also pretty poor. Before beating Rovers in March they had not beaten a Dublin team since 2001 which took in 23 games, 17 defeats and 6 draws. They also had not beaten Rovers since 1997, a total of 17 games, but as mentioned above they have managed to end that miserable run with 2 victories over them. But Rovers are a team well and truly on the up at the moment and playing much better than a few months back and this will be a tough one for Dundalk.
