In his last start, Carpenter pitched 8 shutout innings at Toronto, giving up only 3 hits. He clearly had a point to prove to the club where he spent the first 4 years of his MLB career, and now he's in yet another position where he has something to prove. With this guy, situations like these always bring out the best.
Carpenter is clearly a great pitcher, backed up by his numbers, 21-2 with a 2.37ERA since July 1st 2009! However, 3 starts back, the Cardinals lost 7-5 at Arizona with Carpenter pitching. He did not get a decision, but was clearly having a shocker, giving up a season high of 5 walks, and reaching a season high of 19.5 PPI (pitches per inning). He will want to make amends for that tonight and his opponents have an offence that lacks discipline and will swing quite freely at the pitches they face.
Even taking into account that shocker at Phoenix, he has gone 1-0 with a 2.25ERA over 24 innings against the Diamondbacks the last 2 seasons. He will be dominant here again, and after yesterday's game at Kansas City, all key bullpen pitchers have their arms well rested and ready. The Cardinals bullpen is also clearly way better than the Diamonbacks, with their ERA's being 2.90 and 6.03 respectively.
Quick word about the Diamondbacks now. Danny Haren will pitch tonight, but his performance has dropped this season due to the opposing offences making much better contact with his pitches. His ERA jump from 3.14 to 4.65 is a direct result of a major climb in Hits per 9 (up from 7.53 to 10.05) and HR’s per 9 (up from 1.06 to 1.56), and while he gave the appearance of doing quite well against the Yankees in his last outing (3 runs in 7 innings pitched), he did not register a single ground ball out in that game, while getting 12 in the air. 2 starts back it was 7 in the air with only four on the ground in a game at Boston. I've already mentioned in previous previews how good the Cardinals offence is. Against this kind of pitching, expect the home team to have a field day.
