Eight runs is quite a low number to be seeing in a Boston game right now, seeing as they play some high scoring games.
In a match featuring Tim Wakefield and Jonathan Sanchez, with both the team bullpens overworked, this is a good bet, as even an 8 run total finish sees us get our money back. I'd be surprised to see only 7 scored here.
Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox have played 22 games in June, of which only 5 finished with fewer than 8 runs. The last time the over was set at 8 was when John Lackey and Ubaldo Jimenez faced each other earlier this week, and that sailed over by a bit.
Tim Wakefield has a 2-5 record with a 5.33ERA, so nothing special there. The bullpen that will follow him have major issues. Jonathan Papelbon will almost certainly not pitch after his back-to-back nights of work, throwing 32 pitches on Thursday.
Daniel Bard also did a back-to-back and has never pitched 3 straight days in his career. The closer position will not be filled easily, as Scott Atchison is out after 36 pitches last night, and Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez and Hideki Okajima have all work at least 2 of the 3 games in Colorado. They all pitched last night too, so expect some runs to be scored off any pitching from this weary lot.
San Francisco Giants
Jonathan Sanchez is better, with a 5-5 record and a 2.90ERA, but this is a definitely a difficult match for him. His opponents, the Red Sox, lead the Major Leagues in runs and hits, but they are 3rd in drawing Walks, which has proven to be his weak point.
A patient, organised offensive unit such as Bostons can force him to go into high pitch counts, which will throw him off his game.
Sanchez is coming off of a season high 27.4 PPI in his last outing, when he walked 5 of the 17 batters he faced at Toronto. This was the 4th time in the last 11 starts he has been pushed above 20.0, and it wouldn't be surprising to see that happen here again against the Red Sox.
Both Barry Zito and Matt Cain only lasting a combined 6.2 innings in the last two days as starters, so the Giant bullpen has it's own problems with fatigue and overworking. I reckon Boston could put up a few here tonight too.
Betting Verdict
So, take the over and cheer on BOTH teams. Easy.
