COLORADO ROCKIES (13-13)
Colorado's Jimenez was in outstanding form yesterday, leading them to a 5-2 win. He struck out a season high 13 batters, and gave up just the single run in 4 hits. It was the only way the Rockies were going to beat the Padres, a team in fine form themselves, and this was only their 2nd loss in their last 7 games.
Tonight, Greg Smith will try to rebound from his last start, which was rubbish. The left-hander was very lucky to receive a no-decision on Wednesday against Arizona, as he allowed 6 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks over just 1 inning of work!!
The 26-year-old has now allowed 10 runs and 3 homers in his last two starts, pitching just 6 innings, and is set to face the Padres for the first time tonight. His record is now 1-2 with a 7.33 ERA and, in that form, I wouldn't touch him with yours.
SAN DIEGO PADRES (16-10)
Despite yesterday's loss, the Padres have actually been very good at home this season. They've been particularly good as home favourites, and a quick look at some statistics shows they're 4-1 vs. southpaw starters on the season. So think how well they will do coming off a loss, at home in front of their fans, against a bad southpaw starter?
On the mound for the home team will be Wade LeBlanc. The left-hander was promoted from Triple-A Portland in mid April after Chris Young suffered a right shoulder sprain. LeBlanc hasn't allowed a run since the 1st inning of his first start vs. Arizona on April 18, putting together a scoreless innings run of 16 2/3 frames!
LeBlanc has won consecutive starts to improve to 2-0 with a 0.52 ERA this year!! That's some sick pitching, to be honest, and definitely the kind of man I want on the mound when there is money riding on it.
