Analysis:Udinese are almost safe from relegation but for Siena they are fighting against the drop being 2nd from the bottom heading into this match. As it is now, Udinese are in 15th spot, five points clear of the drop zone, whilst Siena are in 19th, six points short of safety.
A defeat to Udinese would all but end Siena's hopes of staying in Serie A as well as their seven years in the top flight. That means the visitors would be left needing two wins from their last three games to have even a slim chance of safety, and their remaining fixtures couldn’t be much tougher – at home to Palermo, away to Fiorentina and at home to Inter.
Alberto Malesani has at least made sure his team will go down without shame. The minnows from the Montepaschi Arena have put up one hell of a fight and shown some remarkable spirit in recent months despite the odds being against them.
Against Juventus they came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3, against Bari they trailed twice and won 3-2, and just last week they came from behind to draw in Catania. Sadly that might still not be good enough for them though. but Malesani has done enough to restore his reputation, and if Siena do make the drop he should at least stay at the hot seat and bring them back to Serie A.
As for the host Udinese, they have under achieved this season. It all started after that decision to replace Coach Pasquale Marino with Gianni De Biasi mid-season have left them mired in the bottom half instead of fighting for a place in the Europa League. Marino is back at the helm now and has led a revival of sorts, but whether he’ll still be in the coaching position next season remains to be seen.
His imediate task is to see them avoid being dragged into the relegation battle and it should almost be safe. They have a five point lead and that should be safe enough for them.
As for the team news, Udinese’s Gaetano D’Agostino, Christian Obodo, Dusan Basta and Andrea Coda are injured whilst Cristian Zapata and Paolo Sammarco are suspended. While for Siena, Abdel Ghezzal and Aleandro Rosi are out on suspension, as well as injuries to Michele Fini and Francesco Parravacini.
