Football : England : Premier League
Saturday 27th March 2010 – Kickoff 3pm
Portsmouth finally took a brutal battering on the pitch last week and, with hardly a couple of days to walk it off, must now travel to London to face old boss ‘Arry and his highflying Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham
Spurs have been priced at 1.25 for this game, which I think is a good price for what is surely this weeks banker bet. The Londoners are in excellent form recently, having knocked out Fulham to reach the FA Cup semi finals at Wembley where, strangely enough, they will also play Portsmouth.
Spurs have gone on a run of 4 straight league wins to get to 4th, and with Manchester City losing, and Villa drawing for a 2nd straight game, Redknapp made sure his side capitalised and cemented their position for a place in Europe. A win here would really consolidate their place and make it theirs to lose.
The rest of the run-in includes matches with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, all one after another, and with the team surely expected to drop points there, they have to make sure the rest of the matches are wins, starting with this one.
Spurs big problem, as was highlighted in midweek, is their slow start to games. This is often punished and they were quite lucky to find themselves only 1-0 down at halftime. Luckily, their 2nd half performance gave them the win, but I’m sure Harry would have picked up on this and will be out to attack and punish Portsmouth right from the start to make the game safe as fast as possible.
Portsmouth
Despite all the trouble off the pitch, Pompey had been keeping their chin up and pulling out wonderful results, recently coming from behind to beat Hull City, and of course, there is the FA Cup, where the team have reached the semi-finals and will play Tottenham.
Portsmouth's form finally crashed as they were spanked 5-0 by a rampant Chelsea. It’s tough to recover from a beating of that nature, especially when you then have to travel to play a side that is more than capable of running up the score on you with the same ruthlessness.
The FA have announced that the whole Portsmouth squad is up for sale, and that they will let the club sell players outside the transfer window. While it’s a sad state of affairs for the club, the fact is that now every man is out to secure his future, which means the focus will be on outstanding personal performances.
As anyone who has played a team sport will tell you, that can of agenda always ends badly for the team. There might be a moment of magic here, but over 90 minutes, they will surely be beaten and beaten well.
On the road, Portsmouth’s form has been awful. They failed to score in half their away matches, registering only 8 goals in total. They have scored recently at Liverpool, but then again who hasn’t. With the way Spurs are playing, Pompey will need to score at least a couple to stay competitive, but I don’t think they’re capable of that.
The Betting Verdict :
This has home win written all over it, and I would advise sticking Tottenham @ 1.25 into any accumulators you might play.
Roman Pavlyuchenko has been on a tear recently, proving the club do actually need his services after all. He scored the winner against Fulham, in fact he has scored on his last 2 games at White Heart Lane. I think he repeats the trick here again.
