Wolves are undefeated in 3 games now, and have pulled themselves further away from the relegation battle, sitting 15th. Can Mick McCarthy’s team pull another upset here, or will Moyes’ boys continue their hot streak?
Wolverhampton Wanderers
In their last match, Wolves visited Upton Park, and pulled off a massive upset as they ran out 3-1 winners against fellow relegation strugglers West Ham. It adds to a long list of big results in games they were expected to lose, and with the team sitting up in 15th, you have to now admire McCarthy’s tactic of sending out his reserves to face Manchester United. He’s picked his battles well, and it looks like he’s going to win the war. I’d be very surprised if this side manages to get relegated from here, such is my confidence in the manager, and the team, who have been fantastic.
The reverse fixture at Goodison ended 1-1, which is excellent when you see how many teams have been beaten by Everton. The team will surely draw confidence from that, and their recent results, and fancy their chances of picking up at least a point here. It won’t be easy though, for as much as Wolves have played well, Everton’s current form is red hot.
While most teams fighting the drop have picked up the bulk of their points at home, Wolves have got their by springing surprises on the road. Their last 7 points were all won away, and at home, they have been a lot poorer and easier to beat. Clearly the biggest cause for their shoddy home form is their lack of goals. Perhaps it’s the pressure of playing in front of their home fans that does it, but despite creating umpteen chances, they’ve struck blanks almost every time.
Wolves have managed just 1 goal in over 540 minutes of football at the Molineux. Luckily, that 1 goal came against Spurs on a day the Londoners left their boots at home, and it resulted in a win. But apart from that, Wolves have found it hard to score here, and anything similar will be punished.
Everton
Everton shocked everyone last week when they went to Manchester City and handed them their first home loss of the season. The 2-0 win came out of the blue and both managers were affected so greatly, they got themselves sent off.
That win, probably the best I’ve seen Everton play away from home, puts them only 7 points behind Tottenham, and if they want to now make a push for Europe, Moyes must make sure his team take this chance to beat up a weaker team and add 3 more points to their total. With Spurs yet to face the top 3 sides, surely this is an opportunity to close the gap.
Other than the top three, Everton are the form team in 2010. They have racked up 8 wins from 12, and if they had not screwed up early on in the season, I believe they would have been sitting in 4th and clear of the chasing pack. But, with their run in Cup competitions over, there is only the league left.
Everton's position means that they can either sit back and be content with their slightly better than average position, or make the effort to go win the rest of their games and possibly get a place in Europe. With a taskmaster like Moyes in charge, I believe the latter is likeliest.
The Betting Verdict :
Wolves have done very well upto now, but surely they can’t manage another upset win here. There is a chance of a draw, but only if Everton fail to perform.
And I don’t see the Toffess taking their foot off the gas as they try to build on the freight train momentum they’ve generated over the last few games.
Away win at a generous price.
