2010-03-27 - Chelsea vs Aston Villa

Football : England : Premier League
Saturday 27th March – Kickoff 3pm
With Portsmouth annihilated 5-0 by Chelsea, is it safe to say they’re out of the storm? Aston Villa have the chance of doing a league double, but with their current form, this trip to London might not be so fun.
Chelsea
Chelsea finally steadied their ship with a clinical 5-0 win over struggling Portsmouth. Drogba and Malouda bagged a brace each, with Lampard providing the icing. It was no more than they deserved, as the defence once again looked solid with the return of Petr Cech.
The last game saw Chelsea win 4-1 over West Ham, so they are on a bit of goalscoring run here. But the oppostion here provided by Villa will be a few notches higher than what they’ve recently faced. Nevertheless, Chelsea have scored at home at least once in the last 17 games, and I can’t see Villa keeping them out here, not when they have allowed the likes of Sunderland and Wolves to score and hold them to draws.
The Champions League has once again slipped away from the West Londoners, so they must do their best here to keep up with Manchester United and Arsenal, who are showing no signs of letting up in what is turning out to be the most exciting title race of the Premier League era. I think Chelsea will need to score more than once to see off Villa, but with a low price on the home side, and the visitors highly inconsistent, I prefer to look elsewhere than the home win @ 1.44
Aston Villa
Until very recently, Villa had a reasonable shout at 4th place, but their last 2 results have surely ended that chance. Mathematically they are still very much in it, but looking at the performances of Tottenham, who are the favourites to finish fourth, I think Villa’s chance has gone. Martin O’Neill’s side are now 7th and their away form is not encouraging.
Villa have only picked up 2 away wins in their last 5 outings, a span of 3 months. That’s simply not good enough. Even the home form has recently tanked, with the embarrassing draws with Wolves and Sunderland both coming at Villa Park. For a side that holds the best defensive performances in the league, the results are surprising.
The one thing O’Neill, and Villa backers can take comfort in, is that Villa don’t seem to stop fighting, not even when they’re down. In the reverse fixture, the Villains fell behind to a Drogba goal, only to roar back and win 2-1. Recently, against Wolves and Sunderland, Villa trailed before fighting back to score equalisers.
The Betting Verdict
Chelsea will probably win this, but I don’t think Villa will get rolled over without having something to say. It might just be the solitary goal, but from a wagering perspective, that will be enough.
