I’m hoping I’ve found a bit of midweek value for you all with my next tip at The Alexandra Stadium; mid-table Crewe take on relegation threatened Grimsby Town, who have more at stake than the home team it appears, and a change in fortunes is desperately needed.
Both sets of teams have been in indifferent form lately, with Crewe the slightly more consistent of the two..
Crewe Alexandra (15th) Home : 5-4-8 25:26
The Railwaymen have lost only two of their last nine home matches – 1-2 v Bournemouth and 0-1 v Chesterfield, however these teams are currently lying 2nd and 3rd in League Two respectively and pushing for an automatic promotion berth.
Aside from these losses, there has been a mixture of draws and a couple of wins, notably 2-1 v Burton Albion and a 3-0 win over rock-bottom Darlington.
Their home record stands at 5-4-8 25/26, which is not great but they do possess the necessary firepower to win this one; leading scorer Calvin Zola (13 goals) has had a good season, and he’s been backed up by fellow strikers Joel Grant (6 goals, 4 assists) & Clayton Donaldson (8 goals), with assists being provided predominantly by midfielder John Brayford (5 assists).
Grimsby Town (23rd) Away : 2-7-7 10:21
Poor old Grimsby are still searching for an away win, as it’s now been a run of twelve matches on the road without success. Their last away win was back in September last year when they beat Torquay United 2-0.
Since then, Grimsby have managed seven draws in the last twelve away, so a note of caution there as they tend to delight in being the fly in the ointment so to speak.
Their away record stands at 2-7-7 10/21, which is unimpressive as well as only notching ten away goals all season – only Darlington with 8 goals have scored fewer away goals in the league.
Midfielder Peter Sweeney (4 goals) is the leading Grimsby scorer, and whilst they beat Shrewsbury Town 3-0 at home on the weekend, I feel an away match at Crewe will be a different proposition for them.
