Football : UEFA Champions League
Tuesday 16th February 2010 - Kickoff 7:45pm
With all the talk of Beckham facing his beloved former club for the first time, it's easy to miss how this tie sees a similar situation, as Karim Benzema returns to the club he helped win 4 Ligue 1 titles.
Lyon will take on the Galacticos of Real Madrid, and for a side that has beaten the Spanish giants twice before, have been priced rather surprisingly as huge outsiders both for this home game, and the tie.
Olympique Lyonnais (France)
Lyon, once the powerhouses of French football, have slipped a bit this season, losing 3 of their home games in domestic football. Their home form in the CL however has been very impressive as usual, with 2 wins and then a draw.
Manager Claude Puel has no great injury worries for this tie, with all his attackers fit and ready. Keep an eye on Lisandro Lopez, the clubs big summer signing to score at any time, priced at a very generous 3.25 (Bet365).
Lyon will not hold back on attack here as they try and go for their third successive home win against Real, as they will want to take some sort of an advantage into the second leg.
On defence, Lyon has been criticised for playing negatively and crowding out the penalty area, but this tactic has worked a treat for them, and I would be be very surprised to see them play any differently here against a Madrid side with a lot of attacking quality.
Real Madrid (Spain)
As mentioned, Madrid do not have a good record playing Lyon away, having lost here twice previously. After all the money spent this summer building the Galacticos II, the fans expect them to come home with plenty of silverware, among it, the Champions League.
A 0-0 draw would be a disaster for Pellegrinos expensive squad, as Lyon will no doubt be able to score at least one at the Bernabeu. Based on that, I expect Madrid to pour forward looking for the important away goal, and look good value to get it with stars like Kaka, and some chap named Ronaldo.
While I reckon Madrid will manage to score, the commitment with which they go forward will result in at least 1 counter-attacking goal by Lyon.
Madrid has done well in keeping clean sheets recently but with the way they will attack this first leg, expect their defence to be breached at least once.
