Historically, (for me anyway), Southend United have always been a tricky team to bet against, but they get their chance to bring home the bacon when I back them to get up against second-from-bottom Wycombe Wanderers.
The Shrimpers have a modest home record which currently stands at 5-3-4 15/15, but when you look closely at their four losses and who they were against, it puts a slightly different perspective on things.
The first of the four losses was against Oldham Athletic 0-1, but prior to this they had gone five matches unbeaten including meritous draws with Huddersfield Town (2-2) and Leeds United (0-0), while beating Bristol Rovers 2-1.
Southend also lost 1-3 to a Southampton side still smarting from their relegation and points deduction, and the Saints are too good for League One.
The other two losses have understandably been inflicted by Norwich City 0-3 & 1-2 v Colchester United respectively, but both opponents are chasing promotion spots.
Southend will be keen to get back to winning ways at Roots Hall anyway, and today’s opponents seem ripe for the picking.
Wycombe Wanderers (23rd) Away : 1-4-8 12:28
Wycombe are currently on a four match winless streak away from home, and tend to concede heavily on their travels;
- 2-5 at Norwich City,
- 0-6 v Huddersfield Town,
- 0-4 at Yeovil Town
- and finally a 2-5 loss at home to Brighton.
I guess it’s no surprise then, that they have second worst defensive record away from home (conceded 28), with only Gillingham (30) shipping more than them. The overall away record reads 1-4-8 12/28.
To add insult to injury, Southend boss Steve Tilson has a fully-fit squad to choose from, while Wycombe have suffered injuries to key players ahead of this clash.
