Football : England : Coca Cola League Two
Monday, 28th December 2009 – Kickoff 15:00
Current leaders of League Two, Rochdale, take on play-off hopefuls Morecambe at their Spotland Stadium ground on Monday.
Rochdale (1st) Home : 8-0-3 24:10
A win here could see Rochdale move 10 points clear at the top of the table* and one step closer to League One football next season.
*(not taking into account Boxing Day matches).
Indeed, I certainly see Rochdale as very strong contenders to win the League Two title this season, so they should account for teams like Morecambe, who, whilst harbouring promotion dreams themselves, should be no match for Dale at Spotland.
Rochdale are currently on a six-match winning streak, conceding just three goals and scoring 17 goals at the other end – title winning form indeed.
At home, Rochdale have won their last three games on the trot, scoring nine goals, conceding just one; 2-1 v Notts County, 3-0 v Macclesfield Town & 4-0 v Shrewsbury Town.
They seem to have overcome their mini wobble where they lost at home 1-2 v Accrington Stanley & 2-3 v Chesterfield.
Dale’s attack is spearheaded by Chris Dagnall (12 goals) and Chris O`Grady (11 goals) and these two are in red-hot form at the moment. Will Buckley and Thomas Kennedy are also making valuable contributions from their midfield and left-back positions respectively.
Morecambe (7th) Away : 3-5-3 16:17
Morecambe find themselves in seventh spot, mainly due to their strong home performances, but the away form is what we focus on here and this has let Morecambe down slightly over the course of the season so far.
Morecambe are looking to extend their unbeaten run (home & away) to nine games, including an unbeaten in five away matches - so they're no easy beats.
However, when you dig a little deeper, their last five matches were; 2-2 at Torquay United, 2-1 at Crewe, 4-0 at Darlington, 2-0 at Port Vale and 1-1 at Grimsby Town.
All of these teams are placed in the lower half of the league, and Rochdale away will present a totally different prospect for the Lancashire outfit.
Morecambe’s stand-out threat will be in the shape of ex-Huddersfield Town & Bristol City striker Phil Jevons (13 goals), and if Rochdale can keep him quiet they should bag a comfortable three points.
