2009-12-26 - Liverpool vs Wolverhampton
A Sports Betting Pick by Cruiser
Analysis:Time is running out for Rafa Benitez as he keeps on with the promise that his side will finish in the top four but knows that anything less than three points here and he could soon be out of a job if his side fails to win.
Strange as it may be Liverpool are lying in eight spot and are eight points off the UEFA Champions League places, a competition they ahve already been knocked out this season. Last weekend they were beaten at Portsmouth for what was their seven defeat this season before Christmas and Benitez will therefore be desperate to avoid another setback on Boxing Day against the side that won the Championship last season.
The visitors Wolves will not be short of confidence after a run of three wins from four games, which has seen the Midlanders climb to 12th position in the table. Wolves did enter the headlines when McCarthy selected a second string side to play Manchester United and were beaten at Old Trafford but that paid off as they then beat Burnley in a must win match.
As for the team news, Benitez could start Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani, who missed last weekend's defeat at Portsmouth with a calf injury here. If that is the case then it could be his first start since arriving from A.S Roma as previously he has only come on as a substitute.
With Javier Mascherano out of this match due to suspension, Aquilani could start here, while another option would be to slot short-on-confidence captain Steven Gerrard back into midfield and pick Yossi Benayoun behind Fernando Torres.
Albert Riera, Martin Kelly and Nabil El Zhar are not expected to return from injury until the New Year while Torres who was said to require operation has been dismissed by Benitez.
As for Wolves, McCarthy is set to name an unchanged side from the one that beat Burnley. Apart from the likes of Michael Kightly, David Edwards and Andy Keogh, Wolves have no new injury to worry about. Wolves will have another tough match to go against Manchester City with new manager Roberto Mancini to follow on Monday.
