Rochdale could go third if they beat Hereford United at Spotland Stadium on Saturday.
Rochdale (5th) 3-0-1 6:2
Boss Keith Hill will be looking for a third successive home win on the back of a good performance away at Northampton Town last week when they won 2-1.
Rochdale suffered a temporary blip in their second home game going down to Cheltenham Town 0-1, but since then they have recorded two wins on the trot and looking to extend that sequence against Hereford.
Rochdale home results :
1-0 v Aldershot Town
0-1 v Cheltenham Town
3-0 v Bury
2-1 v Torquay United
As you can see, the basis of their success at Spotlands so far has been built on a miserly defence conceding only 2 goals – only leaders Bournemouth can better that at home having conceded just 1 goal.
Defender Rory McArdle and midfielder Kieran Toner remain the only long-term absentees, but new loan signing winger Simon Whaley (from Norwich City) could be set to make his Spotland debut after coming off the bench at Northampton Town last week.
Hereford United (20th) 0-2-2 4:6
Hereford United will be seeking back-to-back victories following their home win last week against cash-strapped Accrington Stanley 2-0.
However, with heavy financial worries and players long-term prospects a definite uncertainty, this would only have aided the home side.
It’s a very different story this week though, and Hereford have yet to record a win so far on the road;
Hereford United Away Results :
2-2 v Morecambe
0-1 v Crewe Alexandra
2-2 v Aldershot Town
0-1 v Grimsby Town
The Bulls have signed two players on loan; James Walker (from Southend Utd) & Edrissa Sonko. However, these two may not start as Hereford recorded a much-needed win last match.
Bristol City pair Tristan Plummer - who is the joint leading scorer with 3 goals - and Marlon Jackson have both returned to Ashton Gate as their loan periods have expired.
Winger Jonny Godsmark (1 goal) is still out with a broken hand, while midfielder Craig Jones and defender Darren Dennehy are both doubtful.
With Plummer now gone, the other top scorer is defender Marc Pugh (3 goals), so Rochdale will need to be wary of set-pieces.
THe Betting Verdict
However, there doesn’t seem to be too much in the way of creativity for Hereford, and I expect Rochdale to come out on top at home to record a third successive home win.
