After staying up last season, I like most Sunderland fans are hoping for a little bit more from this season and I guess it has not started too bad even if the performances have not been great. Away from home we have done better than at home and are unbeaten in the two away we have played. We beat Spurs 2-1 and drew 1-1 with Wigan and played decent enough in both.
At home however it has been a different with us only getting our first goals and first points of the season when we beat Boro 2-0 on Saturday in a game that to be fair to Boro should have been a draw for me. And again to be honest If Downing had scored the penalty then I even think Boro might have won. Anyway they didn’t and went on to win, and after losing to Man City (3-0) and Liverpool (1-0) in was the shot in the arm we need.
In the Carling Cup this season we have won at Forest 2-1 to get this far and that was in extra time and to be honest it was a bit disappointing as we put out a strong side and Keane seems to be taking this competition seriously which is good from my point of view as I would love a trip to Wembley.
Northampton Town (20th League One)

Right have to be honest and say that I know very little about Northampton but going by their league table position and their points total it has not been a good start to the season for the Cobblers. And when you also see that there only win of the league season came on the opening day means that it’s not hard to see why they are just above the drop zone in league one.
On Saturday they lost away at Huddersfield 3-2 and have drew their two games before that away at Stockport and at home to Peterborough. They have also drawn two more games to make it a current league record of 1-4-2.
In the Carling cup they have already played twice and done very well to get this far. In round one they beat Millwall at the New Den 1-0 and in round two they went even better beating Premier League Bolton 2-1 at the Reebok. So while the league campaign has not started all that well the cup on really has and of course they will be hoping this continues when they travel to Wearside on a Tuesday night.
Verdict
With Roy Keane putting out a very strong side when we played Forest in the last round, I sort of get the feeling that he may be taking this Carling Cup seriously. Because of this and only because of this I think that Sunderland will get through in 90 minutes. The price seems okay to me, providing that its a decent team that gets puts out and as of yet I’m not sure of this.
The bookies are looking at the league position of Northampton and the leagues that both teams are in and of course the type of team that we put out v Forest and have priced Sunderland at 1.33, which seems fair (if we put out a strong team).
But always be careful in the Carling cup and check the team before putting anything on and even when you do see the team, still be a little careful as this is a cup and anything can happen, so to be honest you could do a lot worse that sticking some money on Northampton to make it through at 5.50 or Northampton double chance at 3.10, if you are looking for a value bet.
So it might sound daft me picking three bets but I guess it comes down to how you feel about value (which is very important)
Sunderland @ 1.33 is an okay bet depending on the team news as to be honest we should win this game. Northampton to make it through is a value bet at 5.50 and even Northampton double chance has value @ 3.10.
As a superstitious Sunderland fan, my money will be on Northampton to make it to the next round at 5.50 as I feel cannot lose then, if Sunderland go through and of course I'm happy but if Northampton do win then some cash comes my way.
