The Germans have once more come good and made it to a major final and this is what the bookies thought would happen as at the start they were the favourites and while they have not really played fantastic football they have found a way to make it all the way to the final.
The group stages saw them make it by beating Austria in the their last group game and this was after they had lose to Croatia 2-0 and before this they beat Poland 2-0 and to be honest while they should have easily got out of this group they made hard work of it and in the end if Austria had been a little bit better then Germany could have been going home very early.
The quarterfinal saw a cracking game when they took on Portugal and raced to a 2-0 lead, this was pegged back but then they made it 3-1 the game was won. However Portugal had different idea's and made it 3-2 late on but it was too late and Germany held on to go through to the semi final.
This game was also a cracker as they went a goal down to Turkey and then made it 1-1 and then 2-1. In the last few minutes Turkey made it 2-2 and the game looked as if it would be heading to extra time, but a last gasp German winner put the Germans through to the final with another 3-2 win.
Spain
At the start of these finals I thought that Spain would win the whole thing, as I liked the strikers that they have and after all if you have people who can score goals then you give yourself a hell of chance of winning football games.
The group stages where easy enough for the Spanish, in the first game they beat Russia 4-1 but to be fair I didn’t think this was a fair score line on the Russians and flattered the Spanish a little bit. The next game when they played Sweden saw a decent performance by them but it took a last minute winner to take them through to the quarterfinals. In the last group game they beat Greece 2-1 but this game didn’t mean a thing to either team.
In the quarter finals, Spain for me were by far the better team in their 0-0 draw with Italy but could not break them down and ended up winning the game on Pens. But the way the Italians played it would have been a shame to see them go though at the expense of the Spanish.
The semi final saw the meting once again of Spain v Russia and after the 4-1 win by the Spanish in the first game, I guess a quite a few people would have thought that the Spanish would make this another win. Yet the Russians had found their way and had played very well were out to cause an upset. However the final score of 3-0 was fair enough as the Spanish destroyed Russia and deserved to make it through to the final.
Verdict
I thought that Spain would make the final at least and I guess if you looked at the other half of the draw you would have maybe expected to see Germany playing them and of course that is what is happening. So the question to be asked is will the Germans who have a rich and great past in tournaments overcome the Spanish who normally choke when they reach the finals.
There are two reasons why I’m going for the Spanish here and that is down to the fact that I fancied them right at the start and also if you look at the games played so far in these finals the Spanish have been very good while the Germans have been very average for me.
Now the price for Spain to lift the trophy is a little on the low side as I was hoping for around the 1.80 mark but I guess 1.61 is not all that bad if you do think they will win, which of course I do, so the Spanish to lift the trophy is going to be the bet for me in this final.
