Analysis:Aston Villa who have now Marin O’ Neil in the side as manager is probably the reason why they have managed four points in their last two matches. The same side who just four months ago got beaten by Arsenal 5-0 managed to hold the Gunners to a draw in their opening match and now O’ Neil will have to work his magic once again as Newcastle comes for a visit.
The stats once again do not favour Villa as in their past 13 matches at Villa Park, Villa have only managed to win just twice. The home side will once again depend on Juan Pablo Angel as a lone striker with support from the flanks by Luke Moore and Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Apart from keeping a winning side, O’ Neil will need to make at least one change as Jlloyd Samuel is struggling with the thigh injury he picked up against Reading in midweek. Peter Whittingham is the obvious candidate if Samuel fails to recover in time.
Newcastle on the other hand have doubts on Shay Given and Shola Ameobi. Shay Given was rested in midweek as he is still injured from a back muscle strain while Ameobi is nursing a hamstring complaint. New signing Obafemi Martins from Inter Milan could be unleashed in this match as Newcastle aims to take maximum points here. Chances are he will come on as a substitute as James Milner will start this match.
If one takes past history into account then this tie will go to the Magpies, but that was not what went according to script when Villa played Arsenal. The factor here is O’ Neil’s presence at the helm and considering it is level ball, I will go for the home side to get a win or a draw here.
